WEB BROWSERS
As mentioned on the CAE entry page our site has been developed for, and tested on Internet Explorer 3 , Netscape Navigator 3 and Netscape Communicator. If you are not using one of these browsers we recommend that you download and install one of them. If you are not familiar with downloading and installing software we recommend you find someone to help you. However the procedure is pretty straight forward, here are the basic steps:
- Go to the Microsoft or Netscape home page by clicking on the link from the CAE intro page.
- Look for the small graphic or link that will take you to the download area
- Once in the download area follow the instructions on the screen
- Make sure you pay attention to the directory that the file is being downloaded to, or write down the name of the file so you can search for it later if necessary.
- After the file is transferred, quit your browser and double click on the installation application you just downloaded.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install the browser.
AMERICA ONLINE USERS
The browser provided by AOL will work, however the page layout and the graphics may not always look right. The AOL browser may also present problems regarding plug-ins. Lack of avilablilty or they may not be compatible. If you wish ( and we highly recommend it), you can use one of the above browsers as long as you have America Online version 3.0 or better. Follow the procedure above so that you are assured to have the latest "shipping" version of the Microsoft or Netscape browser. Once you have your new browser installed follow these steps:
- Log onto AOL just like you always have.
- Minimize America Online so you can see the computer desktop screen, but DO NOT quit America Online
- Double click on the new browser you just installed to launch it.
- If you download and install any plug-ins they will need to go in the plug-in folder of the new browser NOT in the AOL plug-ins
All you are doing at this point is using AOL as your internet service provider (ISP). Just watch out that AOL does not automatically disconnect you. After approximately 40 minutes AOL will bring up a dialog box asking you if you want to remain connected. This dialog box is not always visible when you have the browser running. Generating activity within AOL every so often will prevent this from happening.
MACROMEDIA SHOCKWAVE FLASH
You can download the Macromedia Flash plug-in only or you can download the full version of shockwave. Downloading the full version of shockwave will not only allow you to view flash files but shockwave movies as well. This download will take a little longer but will give you increased functionality.
- Go the the Macromedia home page.
- Click on the blue badge labeled "Get Shockwave".
- At the download page follow the instructions on the screen.
- Make sure you pay attention to the directory that the file is being downloaded to, or write down the name of the file so you can search for it later if necessary.
- After the file is transferred, quit your browser and double click on the shockwave install application you just downloaded.
- Follow the instruction on the screen to install the file in the plug in folder of your desired browser.
- You will now be able to take advantage of any site that uses Flash or Shockwave.
ADOBE ACROBAT READER AND PLUG-IN
- Go the the Adobe home page.
- Click on the yellow badge labeled "Get Acrobat Reader".
- At the download page follow the instructions on the screen.
- Make sure you pay attention to the directory that the file is being downloaded to, or write down the name of the file so you can search for it later if necessary.
- After the file is transferred, quit your browser and double click on the install application you just downloaded.
- Follow the instruction on the screen to install the file in the plug in folder of your desired browser.
- You will now be able to take advantage of any site that uses PDF files.
- The file that you download installs Adobe Acrobat Reader and the Adobe Acrobat plug-in for your selected web browser. The plug-in will allow you to view PDF files from within your browser. If you choose to print the document, click on the icon for the printer that is part of the Acrobat Reader interface. DO NOT use the print command from the browser file menu to print a PDF file.
This information and much more is covered in the read me file that is included in the download. It is very helpful to read this information.
